Electrical Lineworker Pre-apprenticeship Certificate
Developed by industry for industry, this certification program will prepare students for a career in power line maintenance and operations.
FORMAT:
- 8 week, full-time program (Mon-Fri; 8-4:30)
- Classroom and Practical Hands-on Training, supplemented with On-line Training.
- STUDENTS: Only available through a sponsoring employer or partnering educational institution. This program is not open to individual registrations.

PROGRAM OUTLINE:
With a focus on creating real results, EITI programs include both classroom and hands-on training. Meeting and exceeding all applicable regulations and standards, EITI programs emphasize safety and productivity.
This comprehensive 8-week certification program includes:
Electrical Theory
- Describe electrical fundamentals
- Describe the operation of single phase motors and generators
- Describe single phase transformation
- Describe metering (single phase primary and secondary)
Safety and Safe Work Procedures
- Interpret OSHA safety regulations
- Identify and demonstrate lock out procedures [OSHA]
- Identify personal protective equipment
- Demonstrate Communication methods
- Fall Arrest/Restrain (OSHA)
- Ladder Safety (OSHA)
- Recognize levels of training involvement
- On sight planning workshop for crews-tailboards
- Safe Chainsaw Operations
- Recognize and observe limits of approach
- Demonstrate Boom Truck Operations
- Traffic Control (OSHA)
- Identify and demonstrate correct grounding procedures
Climbing
- Identify the care and use of climbing equipment
- Climber Maintenance
- Demonstrate climbing wood structures
- Perform Pole and Bucket Truck Rescue Procedures
- Demonstrate working on elevated platforms
- Describe the testing for pole (structure) stability
- Pole stubbing
Policies and Regulations
- Interpret environmental considerations (i.e. Oil Spills)
- Interpret motor vehicle policies and regulations
- Explain employer and worker rights
Tools and Instruments
- Demonstrate the care and use of hand tools.
- Demonstrate the care and use of power tools.
- Demonstrate the care and use of test equipment.
- Describe the care and use of live line tools.
Equipment
- Identify types of line equipment
- Demonstrate care and use of hydraulically equipped vehicles
- Demonstrate preparing and setting of a pole
Rigging
- Describe work, force and mechanical advantage
- Identify and demonstrate lifting components
- Demonstrate knots, hitches and rope identification
Overhead Distribution
- Identify and select material
- Identify line status
- Install pole mounted transformer
- Construct distribution lines
- Install services, meters
- Install guys and anchors
URD Distribution
- Identify and select material
- Identify line status
- Prepare and install secondary lugs and prep for meter installation
PRE-REQUISITE
- Strength in math and mechanical aptitude is recommended.
- No related work experience is required at this level.
CERTIFICATION
Students must successfully complete the program with an academic grade of 70% or higher. Students must also demonstrate hands-on proficiency.
